Toby Melville-Brown - illustrator of architecture, design and big ideas

A commission by the multiple sclerosis charity, to communicate the effects of Multiple Sclerosis. The book was a joint venture, conceived by Freddie Yauner, written by Cathy John and designed by Muro Buro. The book was well received at MS Life and was exhibited at Newcastle City Library. The project was funded by the pharmaceutical company Novartis.

My interest in city life drove me to research; the effect MS has on mobility, in a city. I did a series of interviews with the community. The line “Living in a city in a wheelchair, you often come across barrier other people don’t see”, stayed with me. I drew City of Barriers as a result - a landscape where at first you don’t see obstacles faced by those in a wheelchair, but closer inspection reveals they are everywhere.
